WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is intensifying efforts nationwide to prevent serious incidents on airfields as summer travel ramps up. With increased flight activity and ongoing runway projects at both commercial and general aviation airports, there’s a heightened risk of unauthorized vehicles and pedestrians entering operational areas, potentially leading to safety incidents.

In support of safety, the FAA has distributed updated training materials to airport directors focusing on vehicle and pedestrian safety. A newly released video underscores the importance of refining airfield protocols, maintaining awareness of airport developments such as construction zones and safety boundaries, identifying hotspots, and ensuring clear communication with air traffic control and ground personnel.

Technological advancements such as Vehicle Movement Area Transponders and Runway Incursion Warning Systems further bolster situational awareness across airport operations.
“With a busy summer travel season already underway, we are always looking for ways to improve safety across all airport operations,” said FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker. “Safety is a team sport, and we all must do our part.”   

Last year, vehicle/pedestrian deviations more than doubled in a span of four months, increasing from 14 in April to 32 by August. This year, the FAA aims to proactively address and mitigate this trend.
