WestJet and IAM Union Reach Preliminary Agreement – Travel And Tour World

Yesterday evening, WestJet and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), which represents WestJet’s load controllers, announced a tentative deal on their first collective bargaining agreement. The agreement is now pending a ratification vote by the members.

“WestJet is pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that recognizes the important contributions of our load controllers,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “They play an integral role in the safety and performance of our operations and this agreement recognizes the talent, dedication and hard work of this collective group.”

Over its 28-year history, WestJet has reduced airfares by 50% and expanded Canada’s flying population by over 50%. Starting in 1996 with just three aircraft, 250 employees, and five destinations, WestJet has grown significantly. It now operates over 180 aircraft, employs 14,000 people, and serves more than 100 destinations across 26 countries.
