The Oberoi Grand in Kolkata epitomizes luxury, blending European and Indian architecture. Its veranda offers serene views amidst vibrant surroundings.
Nestled in Kolkata’s bustling heart, The Oberoi Grand stands as the epitome of luxury, seamlessly blending comfort and convenience. Its neo-classical façade and majestic pillared entrance weave together European and Indian architectural styles, a tribute to Kolkata’s vibrant history as India’s “Cultural Capital.” The hotel’s expansive veranda offers panoramic views of Chowringhee Road’s lively bustle and the serene Maidan’s lush expanse, providing a tranquil retreat for guests amidst Oberoi’s renowned hospitality.
With a storied past, The Oberoi Grand has borne witness to Kolkata’s pivotal moments, from colonial rule to independence. The upcoming ceremony, where INTACH will honor The Oberoi Grand with a blue plaque, signifies a significant milestone in recognizing the hotel’s enduring historical and cultural importance.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of INTACH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving India’s natural and cultural heritage. The blue plaque initiative aims to celebrate landmarks across the city, with The Oberoi Grand being among the distinguished fifty recipients receiving this prestigious accolade, honoring its status as a cultural icon with a timeless legacy.
Affectionately known as the “Grande Dame of Chowringhee,” The Oberoi Grand’s legacy traces back to the 1800s when it was the residence of a British Colonel before Mrs. Annie Monk transformed it into a boarding house. In 1914, Mr. Aratoon Stephen’s vision transformed the property into The Grand Hotel, Kolkata, a marvel boasting five hundred rooms and cutting-edge amenities, including electricity—a marvel of its time.
In 1938, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi was captivated by The Grand Hotel’s allure, acquiring the property and initiating a remarkable transformation. Rai Bahadur’s visionary approach led to extensive renovations, encompassing modernizations such as upgraded plumbing and wiring systems, the introduction of hydraulic lifts—pioneering for the city at that time—and the establishment of new dining options and live entertainment venues. This evolution solidified The Oberoi Grand’s reputation as a symbol of exclusivity, drawing in a sophisticated clientele seeking unmatched luxury and top-tier hospitality.
Expressing gratitude for this prestigious recognition, Mr. Vikram Oberoi, CEO of The Oberoi Group, remarked, “We are deeply honoured to receive the blue plaque recognition for The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata. Standing witness to Kolkata’s storied history, The Oberoi Grand embodies a legacy of resilience and unwavering hospitality. As we continue to uphold the traditions established by our Founder Chairman, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, and Chairman Emeritus, Mr. P.R.S Oberoi, we remain committed to offering our guests an unforgettable experience steeped in personalised service, understated luxury, coming together seamlessly with the hotels rich history.”
