The streets of Seattle are poised to burst with even more color and creativity, thanks to the Office of Arts & Culture’s Hope Corps Downtown Seattle Mural Project. This vibrant initiative is a cornerstone of Mayor Harrell’s Downtown Activation Plan, aimed at breathing new life into the city’s core. A collaborative effort involving Visit Seattle, the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA), Belltown United, CID Business Relief Team, SODO Business Improvement Area (SODO BIA), and the Wing Luke Museum, the project seeks to transform Seattle’s urban landscape with over 30 captivating murals, stretching from SODO to Belltown.
These murals, each meticulously designed and executed by a diverse array of local artists, will serve as dynamic expressions of Seattle’s rich cultural tapestry. The artworks will not only enhance the visual appeal of the city but also celebrate its unique identity and creative spirit. Supported by dedicated funding, these murals will be carefully preserved through 2026, ensuring that their vibrant presence continues to inspire and engage the community for years to come.
In addition to beautifying the urban environment, the mural project is expected to have a significant economic impact. By attracting both locals and tourists to explore these artistic landmarks, the initiative is set to boost foot traffic in key downtown areas, benefiting local businesses and fostering a renewed sense of community pride. The Hope Corps Downtown Seattle Mural Project is more than just an art installation; it is a powerful statement of the city’s resilience and a bold step towards revitalizing its downtown core.
“Seattle is an art city,” said Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell. “Our city’s natural beauty is enhanced by our local artists who use our urban center as a canvas to create art the whole community can gather around and enjoy. These murals reflect the creativity and diversity of our communities, adding to the liveliness of our Downtown core during this busy summer season and beyond. I thank the artists behind them and encourage all of Seattle to come check out their work.”
The Hope Corps Downtown Seattle Mural Project is dedicated to transforming the city’s urban landscape by creating more inviting and pedestrian-friendly spaces. This initiative seeks to showcase the talents of local artists, bringing their unique contributions to the forefront while highlighting the distinct character of Seattle’s downtown neighborhoods and surrounding areas.
By adorning the streets with vibrant murals, the project aims to make downtown Seattle not just a place to pass through, but a destination to explore and appreciate. Each mural will tell a story, reflecting the diverse cultural fabric and artistic spirit that defines the city. Through this initiative, Seattle’s downtown will become a living gallery, celebrating creativity and community in every corner.
“Murals are impactful cultural art,” said Myron Curry, local artist behind the mural inspired by Ed Schmid’s book, Beginning Glassblowing. “It not only beautifies but empowers the community to connect and be proud of who they are.”
Residents and visitors are warmly encouraged to explore the vibrant collection of murals that now adorn Seattle’s streets, offering a unique opportunity to witness the transformative power of public art firsthand. These stunning artworks not only beautify the urban environment but also invite everyone to engage with the rich cultural narratives woven into the fabric of the city.
