Flynas, a budget airline based in Saudi Arabia, has received approval to transport Bangladeshi hajj pilgrims starting this year, ending a 10-year period during which only Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Saudia Airlines were authorized to operate these flights. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh granted this approval on May 6, 2022.
The decision comes after long-standing requests from the Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh (HAAB) and other stakeholders for a third carrier to help reduce costs and break the duopoly of Biman and Saudia. These two airlines had exclusively managed hajj transport from Dhaka since 2012 under a bilateral agreement, leading to high fares for pilgrims due to limited competition.
M Shahadat Hossain Taslim, president of HAAB, expressed satisfaction with the government’s decision, noting that the inclusion of Flynas could enhance service quality for hajj pilgrims traveling from Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia.
