The Government of Canada is dedicated to enhancing the longevity and operational capabilities of the CH-146 Griffon helicopters, ensuring the safety of Canadians and supporting the Canadian Armed Forces.

Today, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, announced a $2.28-billion contract awarded to Bell Textron Canada Limited (BTCL) for the provision of in-service support to the Royal Canadian Air Force’s active CH-146 Griffon helicopter fleet.

These helicopters play vital roles in both domestic and international missions, encompassing tactical transport, emergency response, and search and rescue operations. The in-service support contract with BTCL is designed to sustain the fleet until at least the mid-2030s.

Commencing in April 2024, the contract will involve BTCL in program management, engineering, technical and design change services, component repair and overhaul, as well as the procurement of spares and heavy maintenance services. The work will be conducted in various Canadian locations, including British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, generating or preserving 1,130 jobs nationwide.

Through the Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy, BTCL commits to fostering business activities equivalent to the contract value, creating opportunities for the broader Canadian supply chain, including small and medium-sized businesses.

The economic commitments made by BTCL have the potential to contribute at least $125 million annually to Canada’s gross domestic product throughout the contract’s lifespan.

Minister Jean-Yves Duclos stated, “This in-service support contract with Bell Textron Canada Limited will help sustain the Canadian Armed Forces’ fleet of CH-146 Griffon helicopters, while also maintaining good jobs here in Canada.”

He emphasized the significance of the investment on the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, underscoring the commitment to investing in aviators to safeguard Canada. The CH-146 Griffon plays a crucial role in tactical aviation, special operations, and search and rescue, both domestically and internationally. The in-service support contract is deemed essential in ensuring the fleet’s operational continuity for the next 15 years.

Acknowledging Canada’s leadership in the aerospace sector, Minister Duclos highlighted the remarkable economic impact of the project on the Canadian economy, supply chain, and aerospace workers.

Bell Textron Canada Limited expressed pride in being awarded the contract, emphasizing collaboration with aerospace industry partners. They assured that their teams across the country would maintain the necessary skills to support the CH-146 Griffon fleet, with a workforce of 1,500 employees in Canada privileged to contribute to the missions entrusted to the Canadian Armed Forces.
